Aids orphans - the facts
Raising awareness and / or money
At the end of 2005 an estimated 15 million children worldwide has been orphaned by AIDS. The vast majority of them - about 12 million - live in sub-Saharan Africa. Here are a few more key figures:
In Africa we carry out HIV prevention work such as peer-education projects where children educate each other on HIV issues and prevention strategies. We also aim to prevent children becoming orphaned by advocating for treatment access for their mothers and looking for ways to alleviate family poverty. For children who have already lost their parents we work with community members, social workers, teachers and health workers to ensure that they are able to provide quality, child-friendly care and support.
